SUGGESTED CARE & MAINTENANCE FOR
YOUR TEAK OUTDOOR FURNITURE
CLEANING YOUR TEAK FURNITURE Cleaning your teak
furniture can be as simple as hosing it off with just plain
water from a garden hose, once a month, to remove dirt
and debris. If the furniture is heavily soiled, you may
want to clean it with a simple non-abrasive soap
(dishwashing liquid) and water mixture. For stubborn
grime you can use soap and a scrub brush (non- metallic
bristles). If you want to maintain the silver patina on your
furniture, use a soft sponge. You can pressure wash your
furniture on a light setting once a year or so. Using
Oxyclean to remove the grey to restore completely is an
option. Sanding after the Oxyclean application will restore
your furniture to their original form (start with 100 grit
and work to 220 grit to finish). We do not recommend
covering your teak furniture with covers of any kind.
The covers tend to trap the moisture and do not let the
furniture breathe, promoting the growth of mildew on
your furniture.
OILING/SEALING YOUR FURNITURE Oiling/sealing does
not prolong the life of your teak furniture. Instead it
simply helps to maintain the rich golden brown color and
deters the natural graying process. To oil/seal your
furniture, we recommend using Messmer’s U.V. Plus
Natural, which is actually used for decks. There are a
number of different brands. Most products will typically
last 1-2 years before re application depending on the
weatherconditions for your area. It is not recommended
to finish your furniture in wet or hot conditions, especially
if the furniture itself is hot to the touch.
1. Note that for the first coat you should oil everywhere
(including the underside of pieces) to keep the moisture
content even.
2. Apply with a brush (sponge brush on a stick works well)
3. Mix the can well, pour into a bowl or plastic container,
brush on liberally, and let soak in for 20 minutes.
Wipe off excess.
4. Do not sit on the furniture for a couple of days.
5. Best to do this process on the lawn or covered area as
oil can stain concrete or other surfaces.
6. Dispose of rags and brushes outside in water. They
can spontaneously combust if not safely disposed of.
PENETRATING OILS. Note that these are not
Polyurethanes (like Thompson’s Waterseal), but actual
oils that penetrate the wood. All penetrating oils are
an add to finish, meaning that you can add extra to them
over the existing coat (without sanding) provided that
you've cleaned the teak first and let it dry completely.
COMPLETELY REFINISHING FURNITURE Please note that
this is a time consuming process, and is only
recommended if you desire the change from oiled to
natural, or natural to oiled. A pressure washer works best
for completely refinishing older/ gray teak. Be careful to
start with a mild tip (low pressure) till you get the hang of
it. Harsh tips and close proximity can scar the wood just as
it would scar cement or bricks. After pressure treating,
let dry completely and sand your teak with an orbital
sander to bring it back to new condition. The furniture will
either start the graying process again or you can treat it
with a penetration oil to seal in the golden brown color.
